The missing piece your constipation protocol is ignoring

Can I ask you something kind of personal, Reader?

How much time do you spend thinking about your digestion?

If the answer is "more than I'd like to admit," you're not alone. So many women I talk to say that managing their symptoms is basically a full-time job. They’re constantly left wondering why nothing is working. Planning their mornings, their meals, their outfits around what their stomach might decide to do that day. And quietly canceling plans because they just can't risk it.

That's not "just constipation." That's your whole life reorganizing itself around your gut and it's exhausting.

I know, because I lived it.

So why ISN’T anything working?

You've probably tried the usual suspects. Magnesium citrate. Psyllium husk. Miralax. Maybe all three, possibly at the same time, possibly while holding your breath and hoping for a miracle.

And yet. Nothing.

Here's what most people (and honestly, most practitioners) skip right over: your nervous system runs your gut.

I know, I know. "Nervous system regulation" has become one of those phrases that gets thrown around so much it's starting to lose meaning. Right up there with "root cause approach" and "elevated cortisol." But stay with me, because this is actually important.

Your digestive system is controlled by something called the enteric nervous system – essentially a little brain living in your gut. And it takes direct orders from your autonomic nervous system, specifically whether you're in a parasympathetic state (“rest and digest”) or a sympathetic state (“fight or flight”).

When your body is in a stress response – even a low-grade, chronic, "I'm fine, everything's fine" kind of stress response – digestion slows down. Motility drops. The muscular contractions that move things through your colon get sluggish. Your body is too busy preparing for a threat to concern itself with having a bowel movement.

And no amount of magnesium is going to fix a nervous system that thinks it's in danger.

But I recognize that you probably have already heard the advice that you need to "regulate your nervous system" and I'm guessing you've also already tried it. Breathwork. Meditation. Slow mornings. Yoga. You're doing all the things and still feel stuck....but it’s not your fault.

It's not a willpower problem. It's a physiology problem.

Because if you're undereating, if your blood sugar is swinging all day, if your minerals are depleted, your body is already operating from a place of stress. You can layer calming practices on top of that all day long but you won’t get very far. These nervous system tools only work when the physical foundation is actually there to support them.

So the order of operations (aka the strategy) matters.

It starts with eating enough, consistently. Building meals that stabilize blood sugar. Replenishing the minerals that quietly govern everything from metabolism to gut motility to healthy hormone balance. And then we can add in nervous system support because there's something solid to build on.

And what I see, over and over, is that once women are nourished and their minerals are supported, everything starts to move. Literally and figuratively. The gut starts cooperating. The bloating eases. The mental load around food and digestion quietly lifts.

That's the shift I want for you.

Not planning your life around your gut. Not doing a mental inventory of everything you ate to explain why you feel terrible. Waking up and thinking about literally anything else.

It's possible. And it starts with understanding what your body actually needs – not just throwing more fiber at it and hoping for the best.

Hi Reader, Today we're getting a little more personal because I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my life and healing journey lately and I’m seeing a lot of similarities in my clients’ journeys, so there's a high chance you’re experiencing some of these things as well. We want to be told our root cause fits into this nice little box, so we can follow a protocol and BOOM it’s fixed (I know I felt that way for a long time). But 99.99999% of the time, it doesn’t work like that, which can be a...

Hi Reader! Chris, Tony (my adorable orange taby), and I are preparing to move back down to New Mexico later this year and we have A LOT to do. We’ll be renting our house out, so we have some repairs/renovations to take care of first, which means we’ve already started going through and packing up some of our stuff (or should I say Chris has started). While I truly appreciate his enthusiasm and wanting to be prepared, it also means we’re living in a little more chaos than I typically like. And...
